How to engage a lawyer?

Once you’ve found the right lawyer for you, the next step is to effectively engage them. And the first step in that is getting organised, you know, this matter better than anyone. You can reduce your legal costs, communicate with your lawyer effectively and start them on a journey to helping them solve your problem or deliver their legal services to you.

Step two is we need the story and we need you to tell us that story logically, chronologically is usually best, but you know the story better than anyone by giving us all the story in as much detail as possible will help us work out what legal services you need and how we can best deliver those to you.

Step three: stick to the facts. Ultimately, there’s usually a lot of emotion when it comes to legal services, whether that’s a high level of elation because you’ve just signed this amazing business deal and you wanna move that forward or a lot of stress because you’re in a massive dispute you never thought you’d be in. Sticking to the facts is one of the most effective ways you can help us deliver the services you need. Now we understand that you’re gonna be emotional, whether that’s positive or negative, and it’s our job to cut through that. But you can significantly reduce the amount of time that we as lawyers spend on your matter if we can get the facts out of you and work out what services we need to deliver to you in an effective manner.

Step four is make sure that you are open and honest with your lawyer. Lawyers are covered by legal professional privilege, which means you can pretty much tell us anything. And we can’t repeat that to anyone. There are a few limited exceptions to that, but we don’t need to get into that right now. Ultimately the more open and honest you are with you means we can tailor our services to what you actually need and help you get the result you desire.

Step five: and this is a really important one. Be clear on the outcome you want. Lawyers are not mindreaders as much as we’d like to think we are some days. But ultimately, if we know exactly what you want, we can use our legal expertise to tailor our services toward your desired commercial outcome. Now, the law isn’t always gonna work in the way in which you want it to, but if we know exactly what you’re after, we can help use our legal expertise to meld our services to your commercial outcome, as long as it comes within the confines of the law.
